Drew Anderson is an artist who uses analog and digital technology to create public installations and outdoor performance instruments. He was born in Duluth, MN and studied English, music, and art at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He graduated in 2010 with an individually designed degree in the Bachelor of Arts and worked several years afterward as a fabricator and laser-cutter technician in Minneapolis. He now lives in Chicago, IL, and works as the Arts and Technology Coordinator at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. He is an active member of Minneapolis Art on Wheels and is a part of ongoing collaborations with artists Andrea Steudel, Jenny Schmid, and Pramila Vasudevan.
I make objects that have a kinetic or optical purpose within public places and/or social gatherings. My work usually involves a variety of old and new technology, and how I represent this technology is important to me: I am not interested in technology as a subject in general but rather as a resource that might serve art making and the social conscience. To that end, I welcome opportunities for collaboration and teaching.
